Laryngitis- from ancient Greek λάρυγξ - “larynx” is an inflammation of the larynx that most often accompanies colds or infectious diseases.

Laryngitis happensacute (short) or chronic (long). An acute form of the disease usually occurs on the background of hypothermia, laryngeal overstrain, smoking, drinking alcohol. Chronic form may occur if appropriate treatment has not been carried out in the acute form of the disease.

Symptoms of laryngitis:

-feeling of dryness, burning, scratching, tickling in the throat;

-possible pain when swallowing;

-convulsive dry cough, which after some time is replaced by a wet cough with the separation of a large amount of sputum with mucus and pus;

-headache;

-the voice first becomes hoarse, and then disappears altogether;

-the mucous membrane of the larynx is red, inflamed, swollen;

-there may be a slight increase in temperature.

In young children, inflammation of the larynx with laryngitis can be very rapid, as a result, the mucous membrane can block the access of air to the larynx.This condition is also called false croup in children. In this situation, the symptoms are as follows:

-noisy breathing;

-the child is restless, constantly crying;

-in particularly difficult cases, lack of oxygen can cause disruption of the brain, cause coma.

To provide emergency care to your child, you must call the doctor.

First aid for laryngitis

-try to be silent;

-exclude from the diet spicy, salty, eat food at room temperature, avoid hot or cold;

-seek medical help as soon as possible, remember, self-treatment is dangerous to health.

Laryngitis treatment

1.The patient is advised not to speak at all.

2.It is forbidden to drink and eat hot, cold, spicy, drink alcohol and smoke.

3.If the disease occurs on the background of acute respiratory viral infections, then bed rest is prescribed.

4.It is recommended to be warm, avoid stuffy, smoky rooms, drink more fluids.

5.The doctor prescribes expectorants, medicines that thin the mucus and relieve dryness, in some cases, the doctor may prescribe a local antibiotic in the form of an aerosol.

6.It is recommended to do steam inhalation (breathe over the steam) and warming compresses on the neck.

7.If necessary, the physician may prescribe physiotherapy: UHF (therapy, which involves the patient acting with an alternating electric and magnetic field of ultra-high frequency for therapeutic purposes), electrophoresis (electrotherapy method, including effects on the body of direct current and drugs).

Possible complications and prevention

Possible complications

The most dangerous complication of laryngitis is swelling, due to which the glottis is narrowed and asphyxiation can occur. To avoid this, you should consult a doctor after the first symptoms of laryngitis.

If time does not begin treatment of laryngitis, it can turn into a chronic form.

Prevention of laryngitis

1.Wash your hands, do not touch your nose and mouth with dirty hands, avoid contact with sick ARVI.

2.Be tempered, daily be in the fresh air, get enough sleep, watch your diet.

3. Do not allow hypothermia, keep bundles warm - wear a scarf.

4.Do not overstrain bundles - do not shout and do not speak in a whisper.

5.Watch the temperature and humidity of the air in the apartment: the optimal parameters - 20-22 degrees with a humidity of 40%.
