Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie visited the Iraqi city of Mosul to meet with the victims of the recent bloody conflicts that killed thousands and forced millions of innocent people to flee.
The 43-year-old star, known for her humanitarian affairs, is a special UN ambassador. She was amazed at the scale of the tragedy of the inhabitants of Mosul.
More than 70% of the city remains destroyed or damaged. According to some estimates, more than 40 thousand civilians died here.
This trip was the 61st mission of Jolie as the UN ambassador, and she comes to Iraq for the fifth time.
“This is the worst destruction I've ever seen in my years as the UN ambassador. People here have lost everything: their houses are destroyed, they are destitute. They have no medicine for children, no drinking water and basic things. They are still surrounded by bodies under the rubble. After an unimaginable injury from the occupation, they are now trying to rebuild their homes, usually without help. ”
